I didn’t know you all too well,
We may have exchanged hellos at a large family gathering
Or I may have liked a photo on facebook that you were in.
I remember hearing about you in casual conversation.
I remember the smile that spread across my relatives’ faces
What is this anguish on the T.V. screen?
The tears of children, dreams crushed by panels
Used to fuel a money-making machine
Yet people support these ruthless channels.
We arrived that day
Suitcases in hand,
glimmers in our eyes.
They smiled at us
Each placing a kiss
Like boats leaving a harbor
They’re right there in plain view,
Until the minute you turn away
Then they’re gone.
